Playing with code #5: drawing a background

Sometimes you just gotta put a pin in it.. > updating you about my coding journey

Accepting that things come and go

It has been around 3 months that I really worked on this website and on my game project. As I mentioned in an earlier blogpost this was mainly due to personal circumstances. But now I am feeling ready to get back into shape, so as to speak. I have been neglecting parts of my life that brought me joy over the last year: boxing, drawing and coding…

As I am slowly coming back around and start dipping my toes in those waters I realize that I am no longer so invested in the projects I left hanging mid-air and really crave some new things to work on. So this post is to update you on what I have worked on up until the moment I decided to leave the old dress-up game project on hold and also stepped away from hosting my own local AI. Only in this way do I feel the room to start enjoying working on this website again and enjoy drawing again.

I actually moved away from digitizing my world, and started craving doing more ’tangible’ projects. So I now have an actual paper planner again that I use, notebooks to scribble my thoughts in and plan stuff out. And no longer really use the ‘2nd Brain’ system I spent so much time on building in Obsidian…

Instead of feeling guilty about my interests in these things and not pursuing my current interests, I decided to accept that these interests come and go. Who knows, perhaps in another few months I will be back working on my coding journey with full force!

The dress-up game up until now

I was working hard on creating the main assets to use in the game. I had totally forgotten my earlier statement that I would use placeholder assets and fisrt focus on learning Godot! I think my brain is just a bit fried from all the stuff happening lately that I needed some more relaxing distractions, such as drawing. So I started with creating a background image. This was a huge undertaking for me, as I never really draw interiors, and the background is supposed to the the interior of Chloe’s bedroom. I first opened up SIMS 4 to make a basic layout, made a screenshot, and then drew over it.

the different steps: sketch > values > lines > flat colours

1. sketch 2. values 3. lines 4. flat colours

Then I started working the character and the differents hairstyles and clothing options as separate images.

the final sketch result (for now)

Final sketch

You can see the full version of this illustration here . As you can see, I did not completely finish this. But I am moving on to create other things for now!
